Visitors to the Czech Republic should take into consideration that a new law became effective ordering shops larger than 200 m2 to be closed on 8 public holidays, starting from October 28, 2016.
Smaller shops with all kinds of goods are to be open. Large shopping malls can decide whether they either stay open providing services of shops with the area under 200 m2 and letting larger workplaces closed or close the whole premises.
Some shops want to avoid these regulations. For example large toy shops state that they are amusement facilities for children and as such they would stay open e.g. during Christmas.
The new law determines these rules to the following eight state holidays:
- January 1
- Easter Monday
- May 8
- September 28
- October 28
- December 24 – large shops to be closed after noon
- December 25
- December 26
